Saint Ursus of Ravenna

6th century
Mosaic
Apse, Church of Sant'Apollinare in Classe

This is the St. Ursus who was Bishop of Ravenna from about 399 to 426. The inscription identifies him, and his episcopal status is signaled by the pallium around his neck. This is one of four portraits of bishops of Ravenna arranged between the windows in the apse (Eclesius, Severus, Ursus, Ursicinus). All wear identical chasubles, tunics, and pallia; all are framed by an imaged curtain; and all have a stylized crown hanging above their heads.
